Joanne Gardner, Head Coach

Meet our Head Tennis Coach and Instructor at BTSC - Joanne Gardner! Coach Joanne has been a lifelong tennis player - starting to play at the age of 10. She learned her skills at Harding Park then went on to compete with the Ursuline High School and YSU Tennis Teams. She has been coaching since 2000 having spent 10 years at Ursuline High School, then moving to coach the Boys and Girls Tennis Teams at Boardman where she is in her tenth season. Here at BTSC, we have been fortunate to have her for 8 years. She leads our Youth Tennis Team for age groups 10 & under through 18 years (only $30 for members) and coordinates weekly free clinics throughout the summer season for Youth, Women/Beginners, and Men/Intermediate-

Advanced. Coach Joanne also organizes Mixed Doubles Tournaments for the Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day holidays, as well as a Parent Child Tournament in August.

Coach Jo is a Youngstown native and currently resides in the area with her husband Rob. She is the proud mom of 2 children - Sarah and Garrett - and loves playing Tennis, Pickleball, and MamaNet!

Wonder how she got bitten by the tennis bug? When Joanne was 10 years old, she was walking home from the playground and spotted an old racket in a drain...she and her older brother ran home for a fishing pole and went back to “fish” it out! Tennis has been a passion ever since!

Ava Valko, Assistant Coach

Meet our Assistant Tennis Coach at BTSC – Ava Valko! This is Ava’s first year as coach at BTSC, but certainly not her first experience at the club.  Ava has been a member for several years, playing on the tennis team under Coach Joanne Gardner, and winning both singles and doubles championships.  She also played on Boardman High School’s Tennis Team for four years holding the first varsity singles position.  Ava qualified for districts each year, and was honored to be named All-American Conference Player of the Year.

Ava has enjoyed teaching tennis to elementary students at Liberty Elementary as a United Way volunteer, and also has experience coaching at Boardman-Avalon.  She loves to read, exercise, and stay active:)

Ava will be attending the Ohio State University in the fall to major in the Biology/Pre-Dental program.
